Wortley

Wortley is a primarily residential area of the city situated roughly one mile from the city centre. Like many suburbs and areas in the city itself it was originally a small settlement in its own right before it became engulfed in the ever expanding city borders. Over the years it was named various things until some time in the 1700's when the settlement began to grow with more houses being built around the central location of the manor house.

The town of Wortley made its name as a major site for weaving and textiles, and during the latter stages of the industrial revolution it became a major site for the excavation of coal with a large number of pits and collieries opening in the area. Hints of this industrial heritage can still be seen to this day, the old railway yard and engine shed is now a listed building owned by a vehicle company. The Wortley district itself is made up of three different areas, new, upper, and lower. New Wortley is actually closest to the city centre with Upper and Lower Wortley expanding outward from this position.

New Wortley is predominantly made up of 1960's era flats and terraced housing, and as you head from Upper Wortley to Lower Wortley the housing becomes more spaced out with semi detached and even detached housing becoming commonplace. With very close connections to surrounding motorways and good access to the city centre the area is a popular choice for those commuting to surrounding cities as well as people working in the city centre areas. A high population density and predominantly residential setting ensures that there is a tremendous variety of shops and other services within a short distance, and many amenities are a quick walk from the doorsteps of most residents. Supermarkets are commonplace and there are three large parks for people to enjoy at their leisure.
