Stoney Middleton
Stoney Middleton is situated in the beautiful stretches of the Hope Valley in Derbyshire, in an area known as the Derbyshire Dales and the White Peak. It is believed by historians that Stoney Middleton was originally a Roman settlement and some evidence exists to suggest that the Romans mined the lead in the area. Ironically the "Roman Baths" that exist in Stoney Middleton are nothing of the sort, they are actually a modern reconstruction that used the notion of a Roman bath house as a unique selling point in an attempt to establish a new spa resort in the area. This was actually completed with the help of a grant from the Peak Park and made by local craftspeople ensuring that maximum revenue was returned to the community. There is a nearby motte and bailey castle and this indicates that Stoney Middleton was settled by the Normans after the invasion of 1066 and the castle was used to allow a local lord to maintain some measure of control over the populace of the area.
Stoney Middletons unique charm is actually mentioned in the Domesday Book, it notes that the King has land in the area that was used for farming oxen and ploughing to produce crops. The book mentions "Ralph Fitzhubert" by name and it is believed that he may have been one of the original Norman lords. The site on which Stoney Middleton is now situated is actually a short distance from the historic location of the village, when the Black Death swept through the area much of the original settlement was demolished, however some original buildings still existed that escaped the trials and tribulations of this most trying time in history. There are many beautiful spots in and around Stoney Middleton, the popular Lovers Leap sits atop a cliff in nearby Middleton Dale, and there are many country walks and treks that can be enjoyed by everyone from hardcore hikers to sedate ramblers throughout the year.
Stoney Middleton is recognised as something of a major centre for rock climbing with those looking to tackle the peaks of the Peak District venturing to the area to enjoy the many challenges the region has to offer. This reputation was cemented in the 1960's and Stoney Middleton was placed firmly on the map and has continued to be a popular tourist destination to this day. The "Our Father" climb that runs up Windy Buttress is actually considered one of the more challenging climbs in the United Kingdom and Europe, and the many inns and pubs in the area are warm and welcoming even in the stormiest of weathers and serve as a perfect base of operations for any walkers or rock climbers. This also makes buy to let very popular in Stoney Middleton with many people purchasing property to rent as holiday lets for the summer market primarily.
