Nethergreen

Nethergreen is situated just slightly inside the Derbyshire border, and even though it bears the Sheffield S21 postcode it is, in fact, a part of Killamarsh in North East Derbyshire. Recent years have seen Nethergreen become an increasingly popular destination for people moving away from the big city to greener pastures, especially those who work in Sheffield or various other Yorkshire cities. Nethergreen is situated close to Halfway and Mosborough, and shares borders with Renishaw and Beighton. It is also close to the popular Rother Valley Country Park, and it also shares a border with Wales allowing people to take short journeys to enjoy the stunning countryside setting without having to venture too far from home.

Killamarsh (the town that Nethergreen is a part of) was mentioned in the Domesday Book and a number of other historic settlements in the village are mentioned including Nethergreen and it's neighbours of Norwood, Westthorpe and Upperthorpe. Nethergreen is a very historic settlement, the church at St. Giles dates back to the Saxon era but evidence suggests the site had been used as a centre of worship for many years prior to this. The historic feel is continued throughout the village of Nethergreen itself, a number of the pubs and other buildings date to well over 300 years old, and there are also a number of historical farming buildings (some of which are still in use) surrounding the settlement. Nethergreen has gone through a number of periods of industry, starting with farming. Gradually this gave way to coal mining during the industrial revolution in order to feed the Sheffield steel industry, and the river that runs near to Nethergreen has powered everything from water wheels to grain mills throughout history. Nethergreen is unique in Killamarsh in that it is almost equidistant from Sheffield, Chesterfield and Rotherham giving the urban minded country dweller ample opportunity to enjoy the big city should the urge arise or errands need running.

The village is home to a number of major cycle routes, and it also boasts excellent transport links thanks to the Killamarsh railway station. Facilities are readily available ranging from a local library and a medical drop in centre to a number of shops, pubs and newsagents. There are also regular bus services and Nethergreen also lies close to one of the stations for the Sheffield Supertram network. The Rother Valley Country park is a attraction in the area, it lies to the North of Nethergreen and Killamarsh as a hole and it was first unveiled in 1980 as part of a major resotration of the area. In modern times it enjoys a beautiful setting full of greenery and wildlife, and there are a number of activities to partake in within the park itself.
