Manor Castle
Manor Castle is a ward of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. It is actually one of the smaller wards that go to make up the city of Sheffield, and it is home to the districts of Manor, Manor Park, Park Hill, Claywood and Wybourn. The 2001 census that was taken around Manor Castle recorded 21,000 people living in and working from 9,700 households. This is an average to large population density given the almost five and a half square kilometres that make up the Manor Castle Ward. As one of 28 electoral wards Manor Castle is an official component of the Sheffield Central parliamentary constituency.
The major component of Manor Castle is simply named "Manor", not to be confused with the "Castle" ward. Manor is actually a large housing estate area of Sheffield, that is itself sub divided into four regions known as Manor park, Upper and Lower Manor and Manor Top. Manor was originally fields and rural land that was primarily used for farming and grazing until the late 1930's. This period saw a major redevelopment with the aim being to create a new estate that would function as a new development that would assist the problems occurring with regards to overcrowding the city centre of Sheffield. The original plans for Manor did not include any places of work, the area was to be primarily housing with people commuting into the city centre for employment each day, as well as travelling to Darnall and Attercliffe which were sites of industry at the time. The name "Manor" was chosen for the nearby Sheffield Manor house that sits near the park.
Manor has also seen an influx of new residents in recent years thanks to the addition of a new super-tram station at Manor Top. The late 1990's saw further development of the area with a variety of older houses being demolished to make way for newer, more modern housing and a number of urban green spaces designed to make the area a much more enjoyable place in which to live. Manor makes up the majority of Manor Castle, and it borders on Wybourn and Park Hill. Wybourn was constructed some ten before Manor as a larger version of the successful and acclaimed Park hill project. Modern times have saw the tightly packed housing be somewhat thinned out by careful demolitions and rebuilding in order to modernise the area. Park Hill was the forerunner of many modern housing developments with a number of flats originally being constructed in the region to house the ever increasing population of Sheffield.
