Langsett
Langsett is a picturesque village situated near Penistone and the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. It is officially a part of the Barnsley borough and it lies on the southern edge of the area, and it is situated in the desirable S36 Sheffield postcode region. With just 161 people appearing on the 2001 census there is no denying that Langsett is very small, but it is all the more charming for its rural setting and village atmosphere. As you may imagine many community events take place throughout the year and the community itself is very tightly knit due to the close proximity of a number of major cities to Langsett and the desire of local residents to preserve their somewhat idyllic village.
Langsett has a long history that dates back to mediaeval times when it was originally known as Penisale. One of the first times the location is mentioned in any kind of official capacity is in the official Royal Charter that was granted to the village that allowed it to hold a weekly market on Tuesdays and a three day festival once a year. Langsett itself is a part of the wider Walkley suburb of Sheffield and it sits in what many would consider the perfection location with the ability to pop into Sheffield but also to explore the beautiful Peak District which lies close to Langsett. Many people pass through Langsett each year whilst exploring the Peak District and the hospitality of the pubs and eateries that the village has to offer has welcomed many a wary hiker after a days walking in Derbyshire. The area in which Langsett is sitated was originally a small Anglo-Saxon settlement that consisted of a small number of buildings surrounded by dense, thick forest.
Gradually this land was cleared to facilitate the grazing of cattle and these new cleared spaces allowed other villages such as Langsett to spring into existence. Langsett is well catered for facilities wise, with a number of schools dotting the local area and excellent public transport links allowing residents to quickly travel into Sheffield. Buses run at regular intervals and have ever since the tram system was decommissioned in the late 1950's, and these stop at a number of places on the way into Sheffield proper. Many visitors to the area have described Langsett and the suburb of Walkley as having some of the finest views in the entirety of the United Kingdom, and many artists are inspired each year by the sedate pace of life and beautiful surroundings that Langsett can offer.
