Glossop Road Area
The Glossop Road area of Sheffield is a surprisingly cosmopolitan area situated within striking distances of the University and a short distance from the city centre itself. This allows residents of Glossop Road immediate and easy access to all of the city centre amenities including the many shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, attractions and night spots that Sheffield has to offer.
Glossop Road historically was something of a small spa settlement throughout history before it become absorbed by the ever expanding borders of the Sheffield cityscape as it pushed outwards from its original boundaries. The swimming pool and Turkish baths that put the Glossop Road area on the map were first opened in the early 1800's and allowed anyone and everyone to come and enjoy the bathing and facilities. It was felt that a public bath would encourage good hygiene as well as promote health and well-being after a major cholera outbreak a few years earlier.
At the time public baths were seeing something of a resurgence in popularity and Glossop Road was seen as quite pioneering in its time. You can still see the historic remnants of these Victorian era public sites at the current “Swim Inn”. The Turkish baths are still very much in existence having been reopened as a luxury spa in 2004.
Glossop Road continues to be an excellent area for buy-to-let due to its close proximity to the city centre and university. Housing in Glossop Road tends to be made up of flats and apartments with a healthy number of terraced city style homes and also a number of semi-detached properties. The varying periods that the buildings were constructed in gives Glossop Road a real sense of history and charm and allows people considering buying in the area to be quite particular about what they require when purchasing. The area has a very scholarly air due to the presence of many schools and learning centres that have sprung up around the university and you can be sure that there are plenty of activities and community driven events to get involved with and take part in.
