Endcliffe

Endcliffe is actually a large part of the Broomhill ward in Sheffield, the ward itself is home to almost seventeen thousand people in some six thousand homes. Endcliffe is a very historic area is Sheffield and it has been a part of the city from very early on in its history unlike many of the surrounding areas that were incorporated into the city of Sheffield due to urban sprawl. The Endcliffe area and most of the ward within which it currently exists was once a racecourse in the 1700's, when the races were finally cancelled for good on the course towards the end of the century it became a piece of common land that was enjoyed by many.

Whilst there were always a few houses dotted around what we now know as Endcliffe but it did not become a major residential area and centre for people to live until it developed into a true suburb when the turnpike road to Glossop was opened in 1821. This brought trade and the inevitable growth of industry in the area, with many pubs and inns opening to house the passing tradespeople and caravans containing goods bound for market. When more and more people began to settle in the area the Endcliffe that we know today began to take shape. In order to ensure that the housing was affordable most of it was constructed with working class families in mind so there is a large amount of terraced housing still remaining from this period. Bigger houses began to follow as the ever increasing trade brought wealthy merchants flocking to the region, and Endcliffe became a thriving hib and major player in the steel and cutlery industry.

Today Endcliffe is recognised as the home of many students as the largest halls of residence from the university sit in the area, and many students move straight into privately owned houses and flats after they leave the university residences. There are a large number of shops, banks, pubs, restaurants and various other local amenities making Endcliffe feel very self contained in its own right. Various areas surrounding Endcliffe are designated conservation areas ensuring that the history of the region will always be preserved, and high schools and primary schools are plentiful.
