Chapeltown

Chapeltown is a a small part of Sheffield in Southern Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. Chapeltown is one of the major parts of the Ecclesfield civil parish in the city and is well populated and home to a number of businesses. Chapeltown is a popular place to reside as it boasts a large number of shops, pubs, restaurants and other attractions and a supermarket is present to cater for residents weekly shopping needs. Chapeltown is also home to a moderately sized branch of the Sheffield library, and a twice weekly market is held on Tuesdays and Fridays cementing the areas reputation as a centre for trade and commerce. Chapeltown is largely unique in Sheffield in that it is surrounded by vast swathes of green space, and many areas of the town centre are also adorned with trees, shrubs, grass and other greenery. A large cricket ground and wooded park sandwich the town centre and a large amount of moderately priced housing separates Chapeltown from nearby Ecclesfield.

This residential land is still in the process of being developed in some areas but there are still large tracts of agricultural land in close proximity. Whilst there are two Chapeltwon railway stations one is now disused and has fallen into something of a state of disrepair, however there is a local movement that is making some small steps towards refurbishing the old platforms and guard house. It is hidden from view by woodlands and is allegedly haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who were killed in the second world war by a bomb blast while en-route to the nearby tank factory. The main railway station is situated on the Penistone Line and close transport links also exist with the M1 motorway making the location an excellent place to live for commuters travelling to surrounding towns, cities and villages each day for work. The remnants of industry in Chapeltown tend to be clustered around the Throncliffe industrial estate.

This site was once home of the prestigious Thorncliffe Works of Newton, Chambers & Co, and from 1793 until relatively recently it was a thriving and industrious locale with a hand in many major industries. Although it was originally an iron works it soon expanded in various other fields of interest such as distilling coal to produce disinfectants and cleaning products, and tanks were produced on the estate during the second world war. One of these tanks still stands guard outside the site of the old factory, and it has been recently restored to its former glory by a team of hard working volunteers. With the expansion of the M1 Chapeltown found itself once more becoming a site for production and industry and the Thorncliffe site proved an ideal location for an industrial estate.
