Castleton

Castleton is a small village and popular tourist destination situated in Derbyshire in the Peak District, close to the borders with South Yorkshire. Castleton itself is nestled comfortably towards the western reaches of Hope Valley and lies close to Peakshole Water. With just 649 names appearing on the 2001 census there is no denying that Castleton is petite in terms of physical size, but it more than makes up for this with charm and personality! Castleton has been settled since at least 1086 when it was first mentioned in the Domesday book. Originally it is understood that the land and the nearby Peyerel's Castle belonged to Willian Peverel, however it was not really until the industrial revolution when Castleton began to make a major name for itself.

With the lead mining boom Castleton found itself in a perfect situation thanks to the large deposits of lead in the surrounding hills. In fact you can still see the remains of the old Odin Mine, one of the oldest mines in the country roughly a mile west of the village itself. Many of the caverns that were either created or greatly enlarged by miners are open to the public, these include Speedwell and Treak Cliff Caverns, along with Blue John Cavern and Peak Cavern. Castleton is a stunning sight to behold, it rests gently in a hilly landscape and a ridge to the north is the most prominent geographical feature to behold.

Unusually for such an out of the way location Castleton is well served by roads and public transport. There are a number of roads leading into the village and a bus station provides connecting routes to many of the surrounding villages, towns and cities. Castleton is popular all year round as a tourist attraction and there are a number of pubs, tea shops and guest houses that cater to the influx of visitors that arrive each year. The local information centre can provide visitors with information about attractions, events and activities taking place in the area, and a youth hostel ensures backpackers are well catered for. With routes up to Cave Dave, Mam Tor and Hollins Cross Castleton is a major centre for hikers, backpackers and walkers who visit to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Peak District.

A number of public footpaths start in the village and spread across the region and there are a wide range of walks suitable for all fitness levels and levels of expertise. Magnificent views can be enjoyed from the short walk to Great Ridge, and there are also a number of two and three day trails that can be undertaken. Castleton was recently immortalised in television when it was featured in an episode of Most Haunted, a team "investigated" the murder of en engaged couple in the 1700's and supposed hauntings that are related to this event.
