Carterknowle
Carterknowle is a key part of the Nether Edge Ward, one of the main regions of Sheffield and one of the twenty eight electoral wards that complete the city. Carterknowle is nestled in Nether Edge along with Sharrow Vale, Banner Cross, and the famous area of Brincliffe. Carterknowle (also sometimes referred to as Carter Knowle) is a small area, in fact Nether Edge as a whole is just 3.4 square kilometres, and this ward sits neatly to the south of Sheffield. When the most recent census information is examined we find that in 2001 the area boasted 18,000 people in 7,100 homes, Carterknowle also forms a part of one of the main wards that form the Sheffield Central parliamentary constituency, an area of some prominence.
Historically Carterknowle was a relatively sparsely populated area containing just a small number of cottages and buildings dotted around together to form small hamlets. Throughout the mediaeval period it remained this way with the inhabitants of what we now know as Carterknowle working the land in relative peace and quiet, and it was not until the 19th century was the region was developed thanks to the efforts of one George Wostenholm. In 1836 he purchased a large swathe of land in the Carterknowle area after making a living as a successful cutler. He constructed a vast estate for professional people including merchants and tradesfolk to live in and based it on Boston in the USA. Wostenholm himself occupied a large building in Brincliffe near Carterknowle that was known as Kenwood House. Over the years time took its toll and when it was more financially viable to sell his land for development he did so and the moderately priced housing that following spurred a new wave of development of the surrounding area, creating what we now know as Carterknowle and much as Sheffield central.
Since September 2002 large portions of Nether Edge and Carterknowle have been designated conservation areas ensuring the unique landscape and architecture in the locale is protected from excessive development and expansion that would otherwise destroy the charachter of the region. Carterknowle along with the other areas that make up Nether Edge have the advantage of being fairly self contained with easy access to shops, cinemas, night life and other entertainments ensuring that apart from the odd trip into the city centre of Sheffield residents are very self sufficient and most things are just a short walk away. The Bannerdale campus of Sheffield College is situated nearby ensuring that the area has a vibrant and youthful culture coupled with some of the most majestic and beautiful architecture that the city of Sheffield has to offer.
