Broomhill

Broomhill is both a district and a ward of the South Yorkshire city of Sheffield. As one of the most central areas of the city and also one of the smallest wards Broomhill is heavily populated as one would expect from central city region, the last census records just under 17,000 people occupying nearly 6,000 households in an area of just under 3 square kilometres.

It is also one fifth of the Sheffield Central constituency. Despite this inner city feel the area of Broomhill itself is remarkably diverse and there is a stark contrast between the more rural and green areas of the ward and the most built up regions. Broomhill is also a popular destination for university students as it sits very close to the University of Sheffield and areas such as Parkers Road have developed greatly in recent years becoming thriving and cosmopolitan communities. Many studies have indicated that there is a surprising amount of wealth in Broomhill, the concensus is that many students graduate and move onto higher paying jobs in the city proper whilst remaining resident in Broomhill, this has helped to diversify the ward and the suburb even further and now everything from small, local shops to large supermarkets, from charming rural pubs to bustling nightclubs can be found in the area.

Housing varies greatly in Broomhill as you may expect, lower priced terraced housing and flats are common in the student areas along with many semi detached properties that have been converted for multiple occupants. When you venture further from the university there are areas featuring very large detached properties complete with vast (for a city centre style community) gardens. Broomhill almost feels like a microcosm of the city of Sheffield itself, almost everything you could ever require is within easy walking distance the the population is diverse and varied. There is even a lake (originally a reservoir), and schools are plentiful and score well on standardised tests each year.
