Broomhall

Broomhall (along with neighbouring Highfield and also Sharrow, along with the city centre) go to make up the famous and well visited Sheffield Central ward, one of twenty eight wards that make up the city proper. Even though the Broomhall and central ward area only occupies the very centre of Sheffield it still has a relatively large area, some 4.8 kilometres squared, and the most recent census (last recorded in 2001) too note that some 17,300 people occupy the 7,300 homes, households and premises in the region. As you may imagine as a part of Sheffield Central Broomhall is well visited, it represents a large portion of the city centre and surrounding areas so is one of the most popular destinations visited by both local people from the city and also by tourists and people from surrounding areas.

It is a centre for trade and commerce and has recently been re-invigorated thanks to a major renovation program that has helped modernise Broomhall and the Sheffield Central area. One of the most famous landmarks in the Broomhall and City Centre areas is Sheffield Cathedral. This majestic structure was once a mere parish church but has since been elevated to the status of cathedral when a new diocese was created in 1914. There are many examples of stunning architecture in the Broomhall and City Centre regions including the Grade I listed Town Hall, City Hall, and the stunning Winter Garden. Large swathes of the centre are now designated as "quarters" in order to give each location a unique identity.

The Devosnhire Quarter and Cultural Industries Quarter are particularly well known and recognisable. The Highfield area that neighbours Broomhall is home to a very large Chinese community who settled in the region a long time ago and have since made it their home. A large amount of shops and entertainments can be found so when living in Broomfield you can be sure that anything and everything you may ever need is just a short walk away. The Broomhall area itself is actually slightly west of the city centre and it is so named due to Broom Hall, a history mansion that occupies the centre of the area and became the focal point for the community when it was expanded and houses were built on the surrounding lands.

The hall dates back to the 15th century and it has been the site of many history events; in 1971 the vicar of SHeffield was attacked and the Hall set on fire by an angry mob who were rioting against the Enclosure of land act. The Broomhall Park Association is well staffed and ensures that the hall and some land surrounding it are not threatened by developments and that they are maintained for future generations to enjoy. The University of Sheffield is also very close to Broomhall and a healthy mixture of houses and student accommodation ensure that the region is thriving and full of energy and life at all times of the year.
