Brincliffe
Brincliffe is a major part of the Nether Edge Ward region of Sheffield, one of the twenty eight electoral wards that make up the city itself as of 2010. Brincliffe in Sheffield shares the Nether Edge region with Carter Knowle, Nether Edge itself, Sharrow Vale, and a large portion of Banner Cross. The Brincliffe - Nether Edge area is relatively small with an area of just 3.4 square kilometres and it is situated in the souther reaches of Sheffield. Despite this it features an impressively large population, the last census was recorded in 2001 (at the time of writing) and it noted 18,000 people in 7,100 households and homes. Despite its small size Nether Edge - Brincliffe plays a major role in the region as it is one of the wards that forms the Sheffield Central parliamentary constituency.
The Brincliffe region was largely rural and unpopulated throughout history up until the 19th century when it was modernised and began to attract more people to settle down in the region. With clusters of small cottages dotted around it is understood that Brincliffe and much of Nether Edge would have been home to some atypical idyllic mediaeval hamlets up until the area was developed by George Wostenholm in 1836. Wostenholm was a local cutler who had purchased a large portion of Brincliffe and he constructed an estate that was modelled on the town of Boston in the USA, explaining why many of the roads are straight, long, and continue to be lined with trees. Wostenholm himself occupied a large house in Brincliffe - Nether Edge known as Kenwood House. Eventually he sold many portions of his land for development and the resulting homes allowed the area to become busy and thriving for the first time in history with many of the original homes being very spacious and opulent Victorian style buildings occupied by local merchants and traders.
A large portion of Nether Edge and Brincliffe (particularly the greener tree lined spaces) are now designated a conservation area and have been since September 2002. In modern times the Brincliffe - Nether Edge area is relatively self contained with theatres and nightspots coupled with supermarkets, shops and excellent transport links ensure that almost everything one could need is one the doorstep. Brincliffe and its neighbouring areas of Banner Cross, Carter Knowle and Sharrow Vale are all stepped in history and many of the buildings in the area date back to the 1800's when the region was first modernised and settled in any major way. Sheffield College's Bannerdale campus occupies the Carter Knowle area of Nether Edge and Sheffield Botanical Gardens are also close by making Brincliffe an exceptionally sought after area in Sheffield.
