Bamford
Bamford is a picturesque village situated in the Peak District and nestled amongst the dramatic scenery of the River Derwent. Bamford is a popular tourist destination with many people visiting in order to enjoy the hospitality available in the village itself, as well as exploring the surrounding areas and enjoying the beautiful British countryside. It exists as the last surviving village in the area that survived the creation of the Ladybower Reservoir, and a touching story recalls how Miss A Cotterill of Ginnet House refused to move to the new purpose built housing and remained in her home until 1990 with the reservoir quite literally at her front door.
With a population of just over 1000 individuals you are certain of a warm and friendly welcome in Bamford, and when you are in the area you should be sure to enjoy some of the many hikes, walks and trails that criss-cross the countryside surrounding this delightful village, from the walks taking in the famous reservoirs of Ladybower and Derwent through to more energetic hikes. Many of these walks and hikes also visit the famous Bamford Edge, this dramatic scenery juts out dramatically to the north of the village itself, and it is considered an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Bamford also serves as an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding villages such as Shatton or Bradwell. Hope, Eyam and Castleton are also just a short journey away and all offer a peaceful and relaxing way to enjoy the charming delights of the Peak District. One of the more dramatic things to enjoy in Bamford is the sculpture trail, this permanent collection of larger outdoor sculptures is breathtaking to explore come rain or shine and many travel from across the nation to enjoy it. Like many Peak District villages Bamford also plays host to a well dressing festival in July, this unique event sees various wells and sources of water around the village decorated with flowers and other designs in order to celebrate a variety of older, pagan traditions.
The centre of Bamford is home to a delightful area of green space that is home to the Jubilee Stone that was laid to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee year. Many people pass through Bamford each year and admire the villages beauty, the Hope Valley line links Sheffield and Manchester so it is a popular and easy to visit destination no matter where you hail from.
