Bakewell

Bakewell is a famous market town situated in the beautiful surroundings of the Derbyshire Dales. As the largest settlement in the Peak District National Park is attracts a large number of tourists each year who visit the area in order to experience the majestic scenery and countryside along with the rustic charms of Bakewell itself. Bakewell is somewhat central for travellers, being just 13 miles from Sheffield and 31 miles from Manchester, and nestled amongst other beautiful towns including Chesterfield and Buxton. Historians believe that the settlement that we now know as Bakewell has existed since Anglo-Saxon times and it was something of a major town in the Mercian region of the country.

Bakewell Parish Church is particularly noteworthy from the point of view of a historian; it was founded in 920 and has been rebuilt many times since then with the most recent re-design coming in 1840. The Domesday Book mentions Bakewell by name as with many settlements in the region lending credence to the areas history and importance in the past. Even Bakewell's history as a market town stretches back for many years with the first recorded market taking place in 1254! It proved to be such a popular event that Bakewell evolved into something of a major trading hub and there are still pieces of architecture around the town that hint at this period in Bakewell's history such as the River Wye bridge that is now Grade I listed.

Although Bakewell has come full circle and is now again recognised as something of a famous market town it did try to re-invent itself at various points in the past, in 1657 a bathing house was constructed and Bakewell attempted to develop as a spa town like neighbouring Buxton. A mill was also developed in the late 1700's and gradually more and more of the town was redeveloped into what we now know and love as Bakewell. Today Bakewell is probably most famous as a destination for tourists from around the world, although many stop to enjoy the traditional Monday market others flock to the area in order to enjoy the unique charm that it offers and explore the surrounding countryside.

Bakewell itself is also the home of the Peak District National Park Authority, the place from which various decisions governing the entire Peak District are made. As a thriving hub of activity Bakewell hosts a number of events and activities throughout the year. Undoubtedly the most eccentric is the annual well dressing festival in June, but there are a number of more traditional events such as an agricultural show and an arts festival. A festival celebrating literature also takes place twice a year, and a large carnival takes place that includes a procession through town in order to celebrate the arrival of Spring each year.
