Arbourthorne

Arbourthorne is a part of Sheffield and is one of the 28 electoral wards that make up the city itself. Arbourthorne is actually a rather large and expansive area that currently encompasses Gleadless and Norfolk Park as well, and it sits to the south eastern reaches of the city. Together with four other wards (Gleadless Valley, Beauchief and Greenhill, Graves Park, and parts of Richmond) Arbourthorne makes up the Sheffield Heeley constituency and as of 2001 some 17,500 people lived in the region.

The Christian charity known as "The Miracle Trust" are based at Arbourthorne Community Church (the trust aims to reach out to the local community in order to impact the city for good) and the area also contains the extensive Sheffield Springs Academy. The Academy teaches a wide and varied curriculum to a high standard to pupils from Arbourthorne and further afield and while it specialises in the performing arts it is also renowned for emphasising the importance of key stills such as English, maths and information technology.

A large amount of Arbourthorne is home to extensive areas of council housing, however increasing amounts are being sold to the private sector. The modern region of Arbourthorne is also home to Gleadless. Gleadless was once a small village outside of the city boundaries that became a part of Arbourthorne when it became a suburb of Sheffield. It is believed that the village has existed since at least Anglo-Saxon times as the name "Gleadless" is taken from the Old English words Glida Leah, or a clearing in a forest. Arbourthorne is also home to Norfolk Park, a residential portion of the city that is currently undergoing something of a major face lift with many high rise structures being demolished in order to make room for newer, more modern housing.

There is also a thriving student community in the Norfolk Park sector of Arbourthorne thanks to the construction of a student village in the area. The Norfolk Park area of Arbourthorne is so named thanks to the large heritage park that exists in the area; this beautiful public space was once a deer park that maintained close links with Sheffield Manor. Eventually a large part of this deer park was donated to the city by the Duke of Norfolk and it became a popular attraction throughout the Victorian era (Queen Victoria herself visited the park in 1897 amidst a crowd of 200,000 people who attended to witness this historic event). Norfolk Park has recently undergone a large amount of renovation and it has become a focal point for the community with many events taking place such as the famous Sheffield Fayre, and thanks to the hard work of the "Friends of Norfolk Park" the residents of Arbourthorne have kept this historic site in perfect condition.
